Antisummer: The Playlist of the Season

Doug Schowengerdt

07 SEPTEMBER 2020

This may not be the summer we had imagined (or so-called antisummer), but we’re still here to curate the anthems of the season! While it’s been confusing and emotionally draining to stay aware of the state of the world, music has remained one of the grounding elements getting us through these chaotic times. Feelings of anxiety and dismay are in constant rhythm nowadays, but there’s also a strong sense of purpose and drive running through our culture. Creative production has a more politically-minded focus by offering both beauty and social relevance (may we direct you to the glamorous glory that is Black is King?).

Music has always had something to say, but this year’s albums have offered particularly poignant political arguments. Recently, Rina Sawayama led a global conversation about cultural belonging and national identity as her self-titled album, SAWAYAMA, was revealed to be ineligible for the Hyundai Mercury Prize and the BRITs. Brandy’s latest album, B7, has a strong narrative around destigmatizing mental health. Arca’s KiCk i, with the headlining single Nonbinary, explores the politics of identity and gender expression through haunting melodies and razorsharp production. As our attention span for creative projects has shifted under quarantine, the story behind the art is once again gaining center stage.

We’ve put together the tracks that are capturing the disorienting experience that is 2020. This is the playlist to have on as you water your plants, do your nails, try out that new recipe on The New York Times cooking app, donate to GoFundMe campaigns, or just take a moment of reflection. It’s a taxing time, but it’s also a time for experimentation and self-preservation as we gear up for the work ahead. Enjoy the breeze from your window and soak up the sounds of this antisummer.

Lots of love, the projects*
